A single mode fibre optic cable is or SMF is designed to transmit a single ray of light and has a maximum diameter of 10 microns.  Tjhe core of the fibre is a lot smaller than that of Multi mode fibre optic Cable.

Multi mode Fibre Optic Cable allows for a larger badnwidth at speeds of up to 100mbs.  unlike single mode lightwaves are sent in numerous paths.  Cable thickness are typically around 50, 62.5 and 100 micrometers.
